The Effect of Chitooligosaccharides on Immune Function in Healthy Adults Polysaccharides have immune enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-coagulant effects, particularly through the activation of host defenses, such as phagocytes, and appear to enhance immune function and anti-cancer effects. So far, the number of clinically approved polysaccharides in the use for immune activation is very small. As such, we investigated how chitooligosaccharides(FACOS TM , Kitto Life Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea) affect immune activation when administered to normal healthy adults. Subjects were divided into two groups, and daily doses of FACOS (2.6 g and 0 g), respectively, were administered. Peripheral blood samples were taken for evaluation of cytokines at initial and after the administration of FACOS or placebo. Interferon-¥ã/Interleukin(IL)-4 increased in both the placebo(N = 10) and FACOS groups(N = 10). However, only in the FACOS group, the activity of IL-4 increased. Thus, the FACOS group had greater tendency to maintain type 1 helper T cell ? type 2 helper T cell balance than the placebo group. Therefore, we could see the activation of the T cell¡¯s immune function after the administration of FACOS in healthy adults.
